Autumn Equinox
Organised by Kel Portman (cum Arrowsmith) I joined the worldwide Equinox Art provocation with artist/curator Laura Holzmann this year. Together we walked in the spirit of balance and connection, spanning two continents and marking the moments when day and night meet. I walked at sunrise in Kitzbühel/Austria. Laura walked at sunset in Indianapolis/US.
Equinox marks the first day of Autumn in the north and of Spring in the south. It fell this year on Monday, 22 Sept 2025
The Equinox is celebrated when day and night are in principle, of equal duration. In the northern hemisphere it’s also known as the pagan festival of Mabon that marks a time of harvest - in the southern hemisphere, the onset of spring
It’s a moment to recognise a sense of balance and the change of season which is marked by changes to day length, a changing landscape and seasonal transition.
This provocation invited our creative response to the seasonal change. In common with previous challenges, it uses walking and time as a common thread looking at the concepts of balance: transformation: renewal.
The full film created by all the artists can be found here.
Thanks to Kel Portman for curating this project every three months reminding us of the turn of the seasons.
